Doug Williams is now the Senior Vice President of Player Personnel for the Washington Redskins, so he’s got a pretty good idea about the team’s plans for Kirk Cousins. It’s been widely reported that Washington could still use the franchise tag in an attempt to trade Cousins, but on Wednesday, Williams shot down that notion.
Doug Williams says Kirk Cousins is “a free agent for sure.” Williams says “I don’t think so” about another franchise tag

Hopefully, Williams’ “I don’t think so” becomes a concrete “no” in the coming days. The Redskins would be absolutely foolish to try tagging Cousins in the hopes of trading him.
They’ve already pulled off a trade that will send Alex Smith to our nation’s capital, and Cousins would reportedly file a grievance if they used the franchise tag on him for a third year in a row.
So, the only smart move is to allow Cousins to hit the open market without any further interactions.
