Baker Mayfield ‘would love’ to sit behind Drew Brees

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield in college football Week 2

Baker Mayfield to the New Orleans Saints could be a match made in heaven. The Oklahoma product “would love” to learn from Drew Brees, and head coach Sean Payton has reportedly already made it clear he’s a huge fan of the Heisman winner.

Speaking about the potential to sit behind Brees, Mayfield expressed excitement about that possibility.

“I would love that,” Mayfield said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “To be able to learn under him for however long he plays, I’d love that [and] to get a chance to be in New Orleans, a good franchise.”

Of course, there are some other reasons why this could be a perfect match. Mayfield, like Brees, is undersized. He’s just over 6-foot and is going to need to use his intelligence just as much as his physical talents to excel at the NFL level. He’s also the most competitive dude you’re going to find out there, which makes him a Brees clone in that way as well.

Chances are, Mayfield won’t be around when the Saints pick (barring a trade-up scenario), though. New Orleans is slated to pick No. 27 overall, and given the needs of so many team at the quarterback position, we’d be shocked if he were available that late in the proceedings.
