Alex Smith finally opens up about being traded to Washington

Alex Smith

Now that the dust has settled following the shocking trade that will send Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, the quarterback has finally spoken up about the move.

He’s not in the least bit upset. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Smith is absolutely pumped up.

“I’m jacked. I’m really excited,” Smith said on KNBR 860 in San Francisco this week (h/t NBC Sports Washington).

It’s really not hard to see why he would be excited. After all, he is leaving a situation in which he clearly was going to be an afterthought, with second-year quarterback Patrick Mahomes coming on like a runaway freight train.

Now, Smith will be the undeniable guy in Washington, at least for the foreseeable future.

“Once I found out that things in Kansas City were going in a different direction, I was pumped at the opportunity and when Washington came calling I was hopeful that was a possible destination and I’m just jacked that it worked out and that they wanted me because the feelings were mutual and I’m looking forward to it.”

The one complication that could still be an issue here is whether Washington decides to pull off a stupid move by slapping the franchise tag on Kirk Cousins in an effort to trade him. There’s no guarantee that would work, and the team needs to avoid that line of thinking like it’s the plague.

In a perfect world, Washington will waive goodbye to Cousins, let him sign elsewhere and move forward with Smith. But we’re not holding our breath. After all, this is one of the most dysfunctional franchises in the NFL, and it has been known to make some unbelievably poor choices in the personnel department.
