Report: Raiders’ Jon Gruden interviewed Kevin Sumlin for OC job

Kevin Sumlin Texas A&M

Prior to hiring Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach Greg Olson to be the team’s offensive coordinator, new Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden reportedly interviewed former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin for the same job.

As Schefter notes, Sumlin ultimately took the job as the Arizona Wildcats’ new head coach. It’s not yet known whether he was offered the Raiders’ job beforehand.

This is interesting in that the report comes on the same weekend that the Fritz Pollard Alliance, using the Raiders as a most-recent case study, is looking into changing the Dan Rooney Rule. The NFL ruled that the Raiders themselves did follow the rule in hiring Gruden. But the Alliance, which was set up to govern the rule, strongly disagreed with the league’s assessment.

We will have to find out more information when it comes to Sunday’s report before drawing a conclusion. Though, Sumlin and his 10 years of experience as a high level college football head coach seemed to be qualified for the Raiders’ job. Of course, that’s not to say Olson wasn’t. It’s also not to say Sumlin was even offered the job.
