Norv Turner will soon be back on the NFL sidelines. According to David Newton over at ESPN, Turner is finalizing a deal to become the Carolina Panthers’ new offensive coordinator.
He will replace the recently fired Mike Shula in that role.
This represents a return to coaching for Turner, who abruptly left his job as the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator last season. In the NFL since 1991, Turner has led 10 top-10 scoring offenses throughout his career.
He previously spent time as head coach with the Washington Redskins, Oakland Raiders and then San Diego Chargers, boasting a combined 114-122-1 record with four playoff appearances.
The hiring of Turner is a change in schematics for head coach Ron Rivera. He’s now going to rely a lot on the play-action pass and deep ball with Cam Newton under center. It should be an intriguing fit.
