Report: Jack Del Rio a ‘leading candidate’ to become next Giants DC

The New York Giants are expected to hire Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur after his team is finished playing. Now it’s being reported former Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio could join him as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports Del Rio is a “leading candidate” for the job.

“Del Rio has been prominent on Shurmur’s list of defensive candidates, and he is open to joining the presumptive Giants coach,” Mortensen writes.

Per Mortensen, Del Rio isn’t interested in doing this for money. In fact, any salary he would potentially earn in New York would reportedly be offset by the $6 million he’s due to make each year for the next three years by Oakland.

Del Rio, a former NFL linebacker, was a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator for seven years before landing his first head coaching gig with the Jacksonville Jaguars back in 2003. He also coordinated Denver’s defense from 2012-14 before becoming Oakland’s head coach in 2015. The Raiders fired Del Rio right after the final game of the season after Oakland finished 6-10 in 2017.
