Report: Browns would have given Patriots No. 4 overall pick (and more) for Jimmy Garoppolo

The legend of Jimmy Garoppolo continues to swell as the San Francisco 49ers quarterback heads into his first offseason with his new team.

As we know, 49ers general manager swung a deal with Bill Belichick to land Garoppolo for a second-round pick. It turns out, that was a steal. Now we’re learning that, if the Patriots had been wiling to trade Garoppolo to the Cleveland Browns (they were not), they would have reportedly gotten much, much more.

Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, says recently-fired Browns executive Sashi Brown “was willing to part with Houston’s first-round pick and other goodies” to land the coveted passer. As we now know, that means the Patriots would have landed the No. 4 overall pick, and more, whatever that means.

Since the 49ers won five games in a row to close out the season, they’ll be picking either ninth or tenth in the second round. Meaning, because Belichick was so eager to move Garoppolo as far away from his team as possible, he is getting much less in return than he could have.
