Thursday’s game between the San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs got off to an unusual start. Right off of the opening faceoff, San Jose’s Joe Thornton and Toronto’s Nazem Kadri dropped the gloves for a fight.

But what happened during the fight was truly strange. Kadri grabbed Thornton’s rather immense beard during the scrap. As the two men fell to the ice, a part of the beard went with them, no longer attached to Thornton’s face.

Fights in the NHL are of course, common. Fights to start a game are less common, but not unheard of. However, a fight where the biggest casualty was a large chunk of facial hair? We just don’t see those very often. All we can do is thank Thornton and Kadri for supplying us with this unique moment.
