Kevin Durant donates $3 million to the University of Texas

Golden State Warriors forward and reigning NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant may have only played one season of college ball at Texas, but this isn’t stopping him from giving back in a big way.

The school announced on Thursday that Durant has made a $3 million donation to support the Texas Basketball and the Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation.

“In honor of the contribution, of which $2.5 million will go to Texas Basketball, the main entrance to Denton A. Cooley Pavilion will be named The Kevin Durant Texas Basketball Center. In addition, the men’s basketball facilities will be named The Kevin Durant Basketball Facility for Men,” the school announced, via its official website.

Durant’s sense of altruism is by now well known. He was a major figure in the Oklahoma City community prior to signing with the Warriors in the summer of 2016, and has continued to remain a key figure in supporting those in need around the United States since.

“My time as a Longhorn helped build the foundation for who I am today as a player and a person, and the UT team will always be my family,” Durant said in a statement. “It’s important to me to continue to give back to The University and ensure that future student-athletes have all the opportunities they need to succeed. It’s an honor to have such a close and unique relationship with Texas Basketball, and I’m grateful to be able to contribute.”

The former NBA MVP took a huge pay cut to re-sign with the Warriors this past summer, but is still earning $25.6 million annually and is in line for a huge max contract from Golden State after the season. It’s nice to see him continuing to use this vast wealth for good.
