Jets GM willing to trade up for franchise quarterback

The New York Jets hold the No. 6 selection in the 2018 NFL draft, but there’s no guarantee a potential franchise quarterback will fall to the franchise. General manager Mike Maccagnan sounds like he’s ready to avoid that predicament.

While appearing on ESPN New York 98.7 (h/t Rich Cimini), Maccagnan said the team is interested in trading into a higher slot if necessary.

“The simple answer to that question is yes. If that was a player we felt strong about, we would have no qualms of potentially trying to go up and get him.”

Now that both Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen have officially declared for the draft, New York has a terrific chance to select a touted quarterback. Along with Darnold and Rosen, Baker Mayfield has used up his eligibility and will be available.

Though we cannot definitively answer how the Jets view those three signal-callers heading into draft season, the NFL world is certain trading up for a quarterback runs a hefty price tag.

Last year, the Houston Texans shipped their 2017 and 2018 first-round picks to grab Deshaun Watson. In 2016, the Philadelphia Eagles sent two first-rounders, two third-rounders and a fourth-rounder for Carson Wentz and a fourth-round choice.

However, both teams appear to have found a franchise-changing player. The Jets should not allow a loss of significant draft capital to stop them from moving up and selecting a quarterback they feel strongly about.
