Drew Brees wants to play for Saints ‘as long as they’ll have me’

Drew Brees

Drew Brees is edging closer to the age of 40 but has no designs on retiring any time soon and made it clear Tuesday he wants to play for the New Orleans Saints until they push him out the door.

“I’m not in the mood to make anything secretive,” Brees said, via ESPN.com. “It’s the same way I felt two days ago. It’s the same way I felt 12 years ago. That is that I’ll be here as long as they’ll have me, hopefully.”

Brees had another stellar campaign for the Saints in 2017. He completed 72 percent of his passes(!) for 4,334 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. And when his team needed him to step up in the playoffs with the run game falling dormant, he responded in a big way, passing for 670 yards and five touchdowns in two postseason games.

The veteran signal caller has said in the past that he wants to play well into his mid 40s. It seems that desire is still very strong. Now it’ll be up to the Saints to decide how to proceed.

Given his strong desire to continue playing and to stay in New Orleans, it seems likely that Brees (who’s earned over $194 million in his career) will be willing to sign a team-friendly contract that helps the Saints continue stocking up with young talent. He’ll be a free agent in 2018 if the Saints don’t sign him to a deal, but that doesn’t seem like an outcome that will come to fruition.
