When the Miami Dolphins stunned the New England Patriots, cornerback Xavien Howard was sick. And not just in the modern definition.

Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post reports Howard had the flu, played anyway and — apologies in advance for the graphic nature — vomited on the sideline during the game.

Walt Aikens, a safety for Miami, said he had a front-row seat for Howard’s tremendous, horrible night.

“It was rough. He was throwing up his guts. I thought he was going to die. It was kind of scary. I was in the splash zone. He balled out, though. Next time he gets sick, I’ll know not to care about him, because he’ll be all right for the game.”

Howard intercepted two passes during the AFC East clash, and those takeaways led to 10 points for the Dolphins. They pulled off a 27-20 upset of the Patriots, who were heavy favorites in the game.

According to Pro Football Focus, Howard did not allow a catch on six targets. In addition to the two picks, he defended a pass and locked down New England’s Brandin Cooks.

Howard’s performance was already impressive, but the revelation that he did it while battling the flu makes it remarkable.
