Trumaine Johnson wishes he could take back ‘selfish’ penalty against Eagles

Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson helped contribute to a loss against the Philadelphia Eagles last week when he was penalized for running his mouth.

Johnson was cited with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after verbally sparing with wideout Alshon Jeffery. The penalty gave the Eagles a chance to continue their drive, which led to a touchdown score.

Now Johnson says he wishes he could take it back.

“It was selfish act, especially on that crucial drive,” he said, per Gary Klein of The Los Angeles Times. “What I take from it: Celebrate my teammates. It’s not just all about me. If I could take it back, I’d take it back.”

Johnson said that he and Jeffery are buddies. He said they were actually laughing and talking trash, which was interpreted by the referee as taunting.

“If you can see the play, me and him was laughing at each other,” Johnson said. “I knocked down the ball, and the ref took it the wrong way. Said I was in his face and I was taunting him.

“I’m like, ‘I’m just playing ball.’”

The Rams eventually fell to the Eagles in a high-scoring game, 43-35. Johnson seems to have learned his lesson. He will next be pitted against the Seahawks’ receivers in Seattle this Sunday.
