Seahawks’ Quinton Jefferson says Jaguars fans insulted his mother

When Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson went into the stands to go after a fan late in Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, it was readily apparent something set him off.

The entire scene at EverBank Field was incredibly ugly. And while the NFL did not suspend any of the players involved in the incident, the league is looking into a lack of security at the stadium. The Jaguars themselves also took action.

Now, in talking about the situation at hand, Jefferson is telling his side of the story. And it’s pretty alarming.

“I honestly don’t know. There was a lot of people saying a lot of stuff, so I really didn’t tune into anything in particular,” Jefferson said Wednesday evening, via ESPN. “There was really only one thing I tuned into in particular. Somebody said they was going to have sex with my mother. That’s the only thing I really can really remember. There was a lot of yelling.”

Jefferson’s actions obviously weren’t appropriate. But it does give us a better understanding of what actually went down in Jacksonville Sunday. One has to wonder if Jefferson told the league office about his take on the situation before no suspension was handed down.

For his part, the second-year player from Maryland did take some responsibility for his role in the mayhem.

“It was a little hard,” Jefferson said after watching the video of the incident. “It was even worse because I’ve got kids. My kids seen it, my wife seen it, and she was upset about it and everything. I felt even more for them because they had to watch that stuff.”

This type of stuff is happening too much around the NFL during what has been a drama-filled season. Sure the NFL should have suspended some of the players involved. But emotions run high late in the season. It’s now up to the players to keep said emotions in check.
