Ron Rivera shows continued support of outgoing owner Jerry Richardson

Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera is not backing down from his support of owner Jerry Richardson.

Richardson, who is facing sexual harassment allegations, has already ceded day-to-day control and will sell the team following the season. But that’s not dulling Rivera’s support of the lame duck owner.

Rivera honored Richardson in his postgame speech following the Panthers’ Week 16 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“Just remember guys, this is about team,” Rivera said, as transcribed by Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk. “Everything we do is about team. The most important thing is about team, OK? All right, do me a favor – ‘Mr. Richardson’ on three. 1-2-3!”

Two days did nothing to dull that support.

Speaking on Tuesday, Rivera did not back away from his speech. In fact, he continued to have Richardson’s back.

“What I’ve always said is I know nothing about that. I can only speak for what he has been to me and the players,” Rivera said, per Joseph Person of The Charlotte Observer. “And that’s why I did it.”

Something worth noting that Rivera is not the only high profile person within the Carolina organization to speak out on Richardson’s behalf. Quarterback Cam Newton has done the same thing.

Much like Newton, it’s fair to say at least some people will not be happy to hear Rivera continuing to support the controversial owner.
