Report: Tennessee has reached out to Les Miles about HC vacancy

Tennessee athletic director Phil Fulmer has reportedly reached out to former LSU head coach Les Miles about coaching the Volunteers, according to Grant Ramey of 247Sports.

Miles was fired by LSU last year and hasn’t been a hot name this year as teams have looked at replacements. He did win a national championship with the Tigers in 2007 and guided them to seven double-digit win seasons from 2006-2016. In his tenure at LSU he went 114-34 and won eight bowl games.

He also knows the SEC like the back of his hand, would likely have good luck recruiting, and has the big-name recognition Tennessee desperately needs to wrangle after the recent setbacks at the university.

However, an offensive mastermind Miles is not. And Tennessee needs to bring in a coach who can spark an offensive revival, at least in this scribe’s estimation.

Per Ramey, the university could try to solve that issue by bringing in Tee Martin as an assistant, though we’re not sure he’d necessarily be open to a lateral move away from USC.

There have been reports that Tennessee was interested in Martin as the head coach, but he hasn’t heard from the school. Martin did say, however, following USC’s Pac-12 Championship Game win Friday, that he’d be open to considering a move for that position.
