Report: SMU hires former CAL head coach Sonny Dykes

It’s not going to be easy for anyone to replace Chad Morris and the job that he did as the SMU head football coach. Morris has since moved on to the Arkansas Razorbacks, and will now reportedly be replaced by former CAL head coach Sonny Dykes in Dallas.

It’s most definitely an interesting hire for a Mustangs program that turned it around a great deal under Morris.

Dykes spent four seasons as the head coach in Berkeley, compiling a lackluster 19-30 record in the process. Though, his “Air Raid” offense, made prevalent by the head coach during his stint at Louisiana Tech, could play well in the AAC.

Dykes oversaw the maturation of Jared Goff from wide-eyed freshman to No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

As it relates to the Mustangs, they finished this past regular season with a 7-5 record and will be playing in the upcoming Frisco Bowl against Dykes’ former Louisiana Tech squad. Though, he won’t be coaching in the game.

SMU has earned a bowl appearance just five times since the 1985 season. Obviously, Dykes will look to pick up where Morris left off prior to him departing for Arkansas.
