Report: Notre Dame, Syracuse to play at Yankee Stadium in 2018

Notre Dame was scheduled to meet Syracuse at home in 2018, but the matchup won’t be played in South Bend. It’s headed to Yankee Stadium.

According to Matt Fortuna of The Athletic, the New York Yankees’ facility will host next season’s clash between the schools.

This will be Notre Dame’s first trip to Yankee Stadium since 2013, when the Irish downed Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl. Syracuse has also appeared in that postseason game, running over West Virginia in 2012 and edging Kansas State in 2010.

Notre Dame holds a 5-3 advantage in the all-time series with Syracuse, including a 3-0 record in neutral-site meetings. The Irish earned a 50-33 triumph in 2016 and 31-15 victory in 2014. Those games were played at MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL’s New York Jets and Giants.

Had the 2018 contest been moved from the Carrier Dome in upstate New York to Yankee Stadium, it wouldn’t have been a surprise.

However, the Irish sacrificing a home game the week before Thanksgiving is a little bit of an unexpected development. The matchup also would’ve been the season finale at Notre Dame Stadium. Brian Kelly’s crew will travel to face rival USC the following week.

Instead, Notre Dame will wrap up its 2018 home slate against Willie Taggart and the Florida State Seminoles.
