Report: Dave Gettleman favored to land Giants GM job

New York Giants

Less than a week after firing long-time general manager Jerry Reese, the New York Giants already have their eyes set on another veteran front office man.

According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, former Carolina Panthers GM Dave Gettleman is an early favorite to land the job.

“Several sources informed of their GM search say the Giants do have an early favorite: former Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman,” Rapoport reported Sunday.

There’s some important context here. New York missed out on hiring or even interviewing former Chiefs GM John Dorsey after he was hired by Cleveland on the same day that executive VP Sashi Brown was fired. The Giants were set to interview Dorsey at some point this week.

Giants co-owner John Mara noted recently that the team wouldn’t rule out hiring a new GM before the end of the season. Though, the team also wants to interview candidates that are currently active in other organizations. That will have to wait until at least the end of the regular season.

Gettleman, who spent four seasons as the Panthers general manager, was fired following the 2016 campaign. He started his front office career as the Giants’ pro personnel director in 1999, having held on to that role until Carolina hired him as GM in 2013.
