Rams’ Sean McVay blames himself for play-calling issues

Former Rams head coach Mike Martz is not inspired by Sean McVay's hire.

First-year Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has done an absolutely brilliant job for the up-and-coming team. Despite losing to Philadelphia last week, Los Angeles remains one game ahead of Seattle in the NFC West and can clinch a playoff spot this upcoming week.

That’s obviously not good enough for the 31-year-old McVay. He’s upset about the lack of touches Todd Gurley got at running back last week and is blaming himself.

“Any time we’re running the football like that, I’ve got to do a better job of making sure that he gets enough touches to get into the flow, especially when we’re getting some good movement,” McVay said, via the Los Angeles Daily News. “It is a delicate balance. At the end of the day, however you want to cut it, I’ve got to get him going and give him more opportunities, with the way he was running, and have a better feel for the flow of the game. That was something I didn’t think I did very well.”

Unlike a certain head coach in Ohio who is blaming everyone but himself, McVay is taking accountability here. It’s one of the primary reasons Rams players have bought into him and he’s a clear front runner for the NFL Coach of the Year award.

McVay isn’t necessarily wrong here. Gurley ran the ball just 13 times in Sunday’s 43-35 loss to the Eagles. He put up a whopping 95 yards on those touches for an average of 7.4 yards per tote.

The game itself was a shootout, so it makes sense that McVay might have been tempted to toss the ball around the field with an improved Jared Goff. Even then, that temptation should have been muted by the way Gurley was playing.

At the very least, the Rams’ head coach knows what went wrong. Expect him to fix that this upcoming week against the Seattle Seahawks.
