Nikola Jokic could return against Pelicans

A left ankle injury kept Nikola Jokic on the sideline for seven games, but the Denver Nuggets star appears set to return against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Harrison Wind of BSN Denver notes the injury report does not include Jokic, who was held out Wednesday for precautionary reasons.

The injury occurred during the team’s final game in November. Jokic stepped on the foot of Chicago Bulls guard Jerian Grant, fell to the floor and immediately left the contest.

And since All-Star signing Paul Millsap had suffered a wrist injury less than two weeks prior, it felt like the Nuggets couldn’t catch a break. Unlike the ankle sprain for Jokic, though, Millsap needed surgery on his wrist and is sidelined indefinitely.

Despite missing Jokic, Denver played about as well as possible. The team finished 3-4 in a stretch where 4-3 seemed like the best-case scenario, given the circumstance.

Jokic’s return comes at a perfect moment because of a challenging eight-game slate to end the calendar year. The Pelicans, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Portland Trail Blazers account for five of those matchups.

And the Nuggets will be thrilled to have a key scorer — who is also their leader in rebounds and assists — back on the court.
