Kawhi Leonard: ‘I should be back soon’

The San Antonio Spurs have survived without their superstar this season, but Kawhi Leonard is nearing a comeback from a quadriceps injury.

According to ESPN’s Michael C. Wright, the All-Star forward said he doesn’t have a specific date but feels good and expects to play soon.

“I’m feeling pretty healthy right now. I think they told you guys that I’ve been playing five-on-five. So that’s where I’m at right now. It’s been good. Just still, just gotta go through a few more processes of doing that. I should be back soon.”

Even without Leonard, San Antonio has managed a 16-8 record and only trails the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference. The Spurs have posted a 99.9 defensive rating, the league’s second-best mark, per NBA.com.

Yes, the two-time Defensive Player of the Year will bolster that side of the floor. However, the biggest difference is that he’ll provide the offense with a nightly 20-point threat alongside the surging LaMarcus Aldridge.

Last year, San Antonio posted top-10 marks in offensive rating, true shooting percentage and effective field-goal percentage. Leonard’s efficiency was a key factor, since he shot 48.5 percent and averaged 25.5 points. As of now, though, the Spurs are no better than 18th in the three categories.

Leonard may be eased back into 30 minutes per night, but any availability is a welcomed sign for one of the league’s best teams.
