Hornets coach Steve Clifford taking medical leave

Charlotte Hornets head coach Steve Clifford will not be on the sideline for a while. The team announced that Clifford is taking a medical leave of absence.

The details were scarce; the organization only revealed Clifford will address his health and has no timetable for a return.

“Out of respect for Clifford’s privacy, the Hornets will have no further comment at this time,” the release said.

In the meantime, Stephen Silas will serve as acting head coach. He takes over a 9-13 squad that is 11th in the Eastern Conference. Silas’ primary task will be helping Charlotte turn around its road woes, considering the Hornets are 1-10 away from home this season.

The associate head coach oversaw the team’s recent victory over the Orlando Magic because Clifford was feeling ill. Charlotte’s next game is against the Golden State Warriors, and a road trip featuring the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets follows two other home games.

Our prayers and best wishes are with Clifford, and we hope the longtime coach has a full and speedy recovery.
