Derrick Rose admits he could need ankle surgery

Derrick Rose

Now that he’s back with the Cleveland Cavaliers, point guard Derrick Rose has revealed he could need surgery to repair his left ankle if rehab doesn’t take. He told the media on Friday that he has a bone spur in his left ankle.

Rose was away from the team for an extended period of time evaluating whether he wanted to continue his NBA career.

He has since apologized to his teammates for leaving.

“He didn’t have to, but he did,” Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said of Rose’s message to the team, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “He asked me could he talk to the team before we started shootaround and addressed the team. Everyone welcomed him back and is happy he is here, and that’s it.”

Rose hasn’t played since Nov. 7 when he suffered his ankle injury in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Since the 2010-11 season, Rose’s career has been marked by a slew of injuries. He signed on with Cleveland this past offseason for one year and has appeared in seven games thus far, averaging 14.3 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.
