Tom Brady responds to 49ers’ trade request

In all likelihood, Tom Brady will play out the remainder of his NFL career with the New England Patriots. It’s where he’s become one of the single greatest players to ever take to the gridiron.

The Patriots’ decision to trade young backup Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers pretty much put an end to any discussions that Brady might somehow end up with another team before he calls it quits.

In a pretty hilarious anecdote during the weekend, Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that 49ers general manager John Lynch actually called up Patriots head coach Bill Belichick about Brady’s availability after New England initially declined to discuss Garoppolo during the spring (more on that here).

Now in responding to said report, Brady had a rather interesting take on the situation.

“I have never really thought about that either, but I wouldn’t see why that wouldn’t be — I mean, everyone has the opportunity to go to another team or get traded, or cut, or released. I have played with so many great players that that has happened to, several times, and coaches too,” Brady said, via WEEI.com. “Player movement is not new to anyone.”

That’s a pretty calm approach from the quarterback. Sure, anyone attempting to make anything out of the 49ers’ inquiry on Brady is doing it just to set up unnecessary drama.

Lynch’s call to Belichick was likely more in jest. The two have a working relationship with one another and are considered friends. When Garoppolo was apparently not available during the spring, San Francisco’s GM decided to play a joke on Belichick.

But it’s also rather clear that Brady knows the MO of his organization. He’s seen other top-end stars be shown the door in surprising fashion. And he knows he likely wouldn’t be immune to such a decision.

“You try and play well and try and add value to the team and you try and be a great player and if you’re not a great player for the team you are on then you try and be a great player for the other team that you are on,” Brady continued.

The one thing that might link Brady to the 49ers is that he is a Bay Area native and grew up a 49ers fan. That’s about it. So, while Garoppolo looks to make a name for himself in Brady’s old neck of the woods, GOAT will be looking to win more championships as he continues playing on into his mid 40s for the Pats.
