Steve Spurrier endorses Tee Martin for Tennessee job

Steve Spurrier is best known for taking humorous jabs at Tennessee, but he offered some true advice for the program in its flailing coaching search.

While appearing on ESPNU Radio, the Head Ball Coach said the Vols should hire current USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin.

“I think they oughta hire Tee Martin, and that would unite the fan base again. ‘Hey, one of our own.'”

Spurrier mentioned hiring an alum is why he believes Wisconsin has enjoyed so much success this season. Martin doesn’t have head-coaching experience, but he’d provide a much-needed jolt to his alma mater.

Martin attended Tennessee in the late 1990s, serving as the backup to Peyton Manning for two years before assuming the starting job in 1998. Martin guided the Vols to a 13-0 record and a national championship that year, then helped Tennessee finish 9-3 in 1999.

Following a brief professional career, Martin has steadily worked his way up the coaching ladder. He joined USC in 2012, serving as the wide receivers coach for all six years of his tenure while being the offensive coordinator for the last two.

To this point, however, the school hasn’t aligned with Spurrier’s thoughts.

Tennessee tried to hire Greg Schiano before the fan base revolted, Mike Gundy turned down the job and several other coaches have removed their names from consideration. Martin clearly wasn’t Plan A, B or C, but the Vols might reach Plans F, G and H soon.

Perhaps that’s when contact would start with Martin, and Spurrier would look like a prophet.
