Chargers’ CB Casey Hayward leaves team to be with grieving family

According to the Los Angeles Chargers, Pro Bowl cornerback Casey Hayward returned home to Georgia following the passing of his younger brother. Hayward’s brother, Jecaives, was sadly involved in deadly car accident on Monday evening.

Head coach Anthony Lynn said on Wednesday that he is not sure when Casey will return to his team. He elaborated on Hayward’s family tragedy.

“I talked to Casey yesterday, and I told Casey in this situation . . . he needed to go home,” Lynn said, via video released by the team (h/t Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk). “He needed to go home to be with his family, and we’ll take care of this. If Casey makes it back and plays, that’s great. If he doesn’t, we certainly understand.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Casey. We just want him to go home and be with his family right now.”

Though according to this same report, cornerback Trevor Williams said Hayward told him he would play this Sunday. The Chargers play at Stub Hub in Los Angeles against the Cleveland Browns.

Hayward is a big contributor to a Chargers defense that is currently steamrolling its opponents are of late. Hayward leads his team with four interceptions as well as 20 defended passes and 30 combined tackles.

Sometimes when tragedy strikes, players choose to play and seek solace from their teammates.

Our heartfelt thoughts go out to Hayward and his family during this terribly difficult time.
