Broncos deny report that Demaryius Thomas is on trade block

A report surfaced on Monday that the Denver Broncos had placed star receiver Demaryius Thomas on the trade block in the lead up the deadline late last month (more on that here).

It was a somewhat surprising report given that this very same Broncos front office gave Thomas a five-year, $70 million extension back in July of 2015.

The only thing that’s really changed between then and now is a quarterback situation that seems to be among the worst in the NFL.

Following Monday’s report, Broncos executive vice president Patrick Smyth took to Twitter to deny that Thomas was in fact placed on the trade block. His denial was a catch-all that also took on the suggestion that Denver might look to move Thomas following the season.

There’s no real reason to question Benjamin Allbright’s reporting on this topic. He’s close to the sports scene in Denver and has proven to be right on his reporting more often than not.

It is, however, interesting that the Broncos would go on record denying said report rather than just ignoring it altogether.

As it is, this will most definitely be something to keep an eye on over the next several months. Thomas, 30, would be a highly soughtr-after receiver should the Broncos actually look to move on from him following the season.
