Report: WNBA team set to move to Las Vegas

Golden Knights, Las Vegas arm wrestling tournament, Raiders Las Vegas

The Oakland Raiders might in fact not be the second professional sports team to join the NHL’s Golden Knights in Las Vegas.

According to this report from ESPN, the WNBA’s San Antonio Stars have an agreement with a new ownership group that would move the organization to the desert metropolis.

“The sale and relocation now hinge on a final approval from the NBA and WNBA Board of Governors, the source said. The sides expect the deal, which has been in the works for some time, to be OK’d because the team will be moved to Las Vegas,” the report read.

According to the report, the Stars are one of five professional sports teams currently owned by Spurs Sports & Entertainment. This obviously includes the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.

For her part, WNBA spokeswoman Dina Skokos did confirm that there are talks about selling the team. However, she would not comment further.

The Stars themselves released a statement on Thursday via their official Twitter account confirming that relocation is inevitable.

A charter member of the WNBA back in 1997, the Stars moved from Salt Lake City to San Antonio prior to the 2003 season.

If this deal and relocation is approved by the Board of Governors, it would make the Stars the second professional team in the growing Vegas area. The Las Vegas Golden Knights are currently in the midst of their inaugural season. Meanwhile, the Raiders are set to relocate from Oakland in 2020.
