So much for the Carlos Hyde doesn’t fit Kyle Shanahan’s offense narrative. Just four games into his first season as the team’s head coach, Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are apparently already looking to extend the contract of the impending free agent running back.
“The 49ers have begun contract talks aimed at extending former second-round pick Carlos Hyde, league sources said,” CBS Sports NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported Sunday.
This comes after an offseason of speculation about whether San Francisco would simply release the injury plagued, but talented former second-round pick. It also comes with Hyde playing the best football of his career.
Hyde, 27, has been one of the few bright spots on an otherwise anemic offense through the first quarter of the season. He’s on pace for north of 1,600 total yards and eight touchdowns at a clip of 4.9 yards per rush.
As La Canfora notes, coming to terms on a value could prove to be difficult. Hyde is averaging a robust 4.4 yards per carry and has scored 18 touchdowns in 38 career games. But he’s also missed 27 percent of San Francisco’s game since entering the league from Ohio State back in 2014.
