Packers fan starts petition for team to sign Colin Kaepernick

Colin Kaepernick

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned. The Green Bay Packers will likely be without Aaron Rodgers for the remainder of the season after he suffered a broken collarbone last week. Kaepernick is a Wisconsin native and grew up a Packers fan.

There’s obviously some train of thought out there that includes Green Bay picking up the phone and signing Kaepernick. How that would play in the rust belt remains to be seen, just ask former Packers tight end Jermichael Finley.

While signing Kaepernick remains a major long shot, one Packers fan in California started a petition for the team to bring in the former Super Bowl quarterback. The petition now has nearly 17,000 signatures.

“Aaron Rodgers is possibly out for the rest of the season but there’s a Wisconsin-born QB who should be on our team! Lets makes sure the organization know we support Kaepernick to the Packers,” the Change.org petition read.

We can’t be sure how many are actual Packers fans. While remaining a divisive figure due to the National Anthem protests he started last season, Kaepernick has a ton of supporters around the football world. Many of these signatures could simply be from fans of the quarterback.

As it relates to any potential move to sign Kaepernick, that’s not happening. As the aforementioned Finley pointed out, the Green Bay area itself leans more conservative. The dynamic there would be one of intrigue and drama, something Packers head coach Mike McCarthy likely doesn’t want.

With Rodgers’ injury, the Packers have gone from potential Super Bowl contender to unlikely to even make the playoffs. That’s how important the former MVP is to the team. It’s also shown in ticket prices since he went down to injury.

Nationally, the Packers would be a major story if they were to sign Kaepernick. Locally, it likely wouldn’t play out as well.
