Mike McCarthy critical of defense after loss to Saints

Mike McCarthy

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Hundley had an up and down day on Sunday in a loss to the New Orleans Saints. But Mike McCarthy didn’t lay the loss at his quarterback’s feet. Instead, reaffirmed his belief in Hundley and laid was critical of his team’s defensive effort.

The defense definitely deserves its share of criticism. It was awful on Sunday. Despite throwing two interceptions, Drew Brees threw for 331 yards. Mark Ingram went for over 100 on the ground. Alvin Kamara rushed for better than six yards a carry. In total, New Orleans gained 485 yards of offense and picked up 25 first downs. All of this helped contribute to making a 14-7 halftime lead a 29-17 loss for Green Bay.

But Hundley’s performance can’t be exonerated, either.

He did rush for 44 yards, including a nice touchdown. But Hundley was 12-for-25 passing for 87 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. Even with some of the poor quarterback play we’ve grown accustomed to seeing every week, that’s well below NFL standard.

It was a team loss on Sunday. Hundley didn’t lose the game on his own, but his performance certainly contributed towards the end result.
