Klay Thompson speaks out about helping wild fire victims

Klay Thompson

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson will donate $1,000 for every point he scores during a three-game homestand to those devastated by the wild fires in Northern California earlier this month.

Thousands of structures burned to the ground and dozens of people were killed during a series of wild fires that raged in the north bay (more on that here).

Now, Thompson is speaking up about helping his adopted home community. And his perspective on the situation at hand is incredibly refreshing.

“I’ve been here for seven years,” Thompson said Wednesday, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “I know a lot of people who in the North Bay come to watch us play. A lot of them lost their homes and everything they had, even loved ones.”

A Southern California native, Thompson has taken to his new community in a big way. Like most Warriors players, he’s been active in the east bay community. This now obviously extends to the northern reaches of the Bay Area itself.

“I wanted to be big in the community, in the Bay Area, so this is a great step toward that,” Thompson continued. “Any positivity you can bring into the world, and it doesn’t matter if it affects one person or 100 people, it’s a great thing to do. It goes way beyond basketball.”

Any objective NBA observer has to hope that Klay drops an average of 50 points in the three-game homestand that starts Wednesday against the Toronto Raptors.

Our props definitely go out to Thompson as he looks to helps those impacted by the wild fires rebuild their lives. It’s going to be a long process. But with help like this, those in need are in good hands.
