Kawhi Leonard to miss Spurs’ regular-season opener

San Antonio Spurs small forward Kawhi Leonard (2) is interviewed during media day at the Spurs training facility.

After missing all of training camp and the preseason, San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard will also miss the team’s regular-season opener next Wednesday.

Head coach Gregg Popovich announced his star would miss the game and couldn’t provide any update about when Leonard would play.

“He won’t be available,” Popovich said, per Jeff McDonals of My San Antonio. “He’s still rehabbing and when he’s ready, he’ll be ready. I try not to qualify it.”

Leonard has been out with a quad injury, or more specifically, “right quadriceps tendinopathy.”

Last season, Leonard averaged 25.5 points, 3.5 assists and 5.8 rebounds and finished third in the NBA MVP voting. He also had San Antonio going strong against Golden State in the first game of their playoff series, only to be taken out with an injury. San Antonio had no chance after that and got swept, 4-0.
