John Lynch: Patriots weren’t interested in trading Garoppolo during offseason

Jimmy Garoppolo

New San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo met with the Bay Area media on Tuesday, a day after being acquired from the New England Patriots. With him on the podium were first-year 49ers general manager John Lynch and fellow rookie head coach Kyle Shanahan.

In discussing the trade process that brought Garoppolo from the defending champs, Lynch had a rather interesting take. In short, he indicated that the 49ers “inquired” about Garoppolo with New England during the offseason, but were “shut down quickly.”

Lynch also noted that trade talks prior to the season didn’t even get to the point where trade compensation was discussed. This lines up with reports during the spring that New England was not looking to move the former second-round pick.

What changed between then and now remains to be seen. What we do know is that Garoppolo will now be given a chance to start while the Pats received what promises to be a high second-round pick in return for the talented youngster.
