Former Cowboys exec: Dak Prescott won’t ever be as good as Carson Wentz

NFL Media’s Gil Brandt ran the Dallas Cowboys’ front office from 1960-1988. He knows a little something about talent at quarterback, having seen the likes Don Meredith, Roger Staubach and Danny White suit up for that organization during his time there.

In discussing young quarterbacks in today’s NFL, the veteran executive might have made himself a few less fans in Dallas.

“I don’t think he’ll (Dak Prescott) ever surpass Wentz, but I do like Prescott to be around the same level as Goff, a winning presence for the next decade or so,” Brandt wrote, via NFL.com.

To be clear here, Brandt is high on both Prescott and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff as second-year players. He had a whole lot of good to say about each one.

In fact, the long-time executive likes what he sees from Prescott compared to what was a history-breaking rookie season.

“Stats aside, Prescott looks like he’s playing just as good as — if not better than — he did in 2016,” Brandt continued. “He’s operating with more confidence and throwing with greater accuracy.”

But that’s not part of the evaluation fans in the Big D will focus on. Here’s a guy that led the Cowboys’ front office for more than a quarter century indicating that he believes an Eagles quarterback will always be better than the guy suiting up in Dallas.

If that’s not a burn to Texas, we’re not too sure what is.

Statistically, Brandt doesn’t necessarily have a point here. Prescott has put up 42 total touchdowns compared to eight interceptions en route to leading his Cowboys to a 15-6 record in 21 career starts. Wentz boasts a 31-to-17 split and owns a 12-10 record as a starter.

Though, NFL evaluators are paid to look at the tape. Wins/losses as well as statistics don’t play a paramount role in said evaluation process.

Even then, we can expect some push back from fans of America’s Team. Because, why not?
