Don Mattlingly, Dusty Baker among odds on favorites for Yankees managing job

Don Mattingly

The New York Yankees announced on Thursday that Joe Girardi will not return as the team’s manager in 2018. Among the favorites to replace him (per Sportsbettingdime.com) are former Yankee player and current Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly (20/1) and Dusty Baker (75/1), who was recently fired as the Washington Nationals manager.

While the odds are tempting with Baker, he’s not an especially logical option. After losing a heartbreaking ALCS, New York is looking to take the next step. Baker hasn’t enjoyed much playoff success in his career. Additionally, Baker’s strength as a manager tends to be getting the most out of veterans late in their careers. His history with young players — which is what the Yankees are filled with — doesn’t tend to be as good.

Mattingly is intriguing. He has some of the same issues as Baker, having never been terribly successful in the playoffs. But as a player, he was a legend of the franchise. He certainly understands what the New York spotlight is like.

Other listed options include Al Pedrique (3/1), Tony Pena (4/1), Rob Thompson (7/1), Joe McEwing (10/1), Fredi Gonzales (12/1), Kevin Long (15/1), Raul Ibanez (25/1) and John Farrell (50/1).

At this point, the field seems like the best play. The dismissal of Girardi is still fresh and there’s no reason for the Yankees to rush the process. The longer it takes, the harder it will be to zone in on any specific candidates.
