Cubs’ 2016 World Series ring taken off of auction market

Steve Bartman will be given a Cubs World Series rings

Fans of the Chicago Cubs hoping to buy a World Series ring from the team’s 2016 championship are out of luck. A ring that was originally supposed to be auctioned off has been taken off of the market.

“Leland’s Auctions said Monday that it removed the ring from auction at the request of the Cubs and ‘due to a contractual issue,'” an Associated Press report (via ESPN) said. “The team initially raised questions about the ring’s authenticity. Cubs spokesman Julian Green later said the team worked with Leland’s to verify the ring was genuine and given to a scout.”

The report also quotes Green, who said that the club has “identified the scout who no longer works for the ballclub,” and that the ring “was not authorized for sale per the contract with associates.”

Certainly, any World Series ring would catch a pretty penny at auction. Given the long wait behind associated with Chicago’s World Series, we’d imagine that one of those rings would go for more than most.
