Chiefs release C.J. Spiller for 4th time in 2017

C.J. Spiller Dabo Swinney and Tajh Boyd

C.J. Spiller played for the Kansas City Chiefs this past Thursday, toting the rock two times for no yards. On Monday, the running back was released.

The big deal here isn’t that Spiller was released, however.

It’s that this was the fourth time Spiller has been signed and released by the Chiefs this year!

He’s been playing a valuable role for the Chiefs this year, even though he only has the two carries. Any time they need someone to hop onto the roster for a few days, he’s the guy they’re calling. Given the way these things work, we won’t be surprised if Spiller ends up getting another call before the season is up.

Spiller has 3,451 yards and 12 touchdowns in eight NFL seasons. His best year came in 2012 as a member of the Buffalo Bills, which was the only season he ever eclipsed 1,000 yards. His best days are clearly well in the rear-view mirror, but he’s still able to make himself valuable, albeit in a slightly different way than most players.
