Report: Pirates sign manager Clint Hurdle to four-year extension

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle entered the 2017 MLB season as a lame duck. The team held a 2018 option on his contract and had not gone to Hurdle to talk extension prior to the season.

That can now be thrown out the window.

According to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have signed the long-time manager to a four-year extension through the 2021 campaign.

“Hurdle has agreed to a four-year contract extension, which replaces the 2018 club option on his current deal and keeps him under contractual control through 2021,” Brink reported Monday.

Hurdle has had varying levels of success since he took over as the Pirates’ manager back in 2011. He’s led the team to three postseason appearances, topping out with a 98-win 2015 campaign.

Though, it’s been more of a struggle recently. Pittsburgh entered Labor Day with a 65-72 record and completely out of the National League Playoff race. Even then, it seems the Pirates are placing their faith in Hurdle to turn this around. After all, the Pirates had missed the playoffs 20 consecutive seasons prior to Hurdle taking over as their manager.
