Report: Mets expect Terry Collins to retire after the season

Terry Collins

The New York Mets are closing up what has been a disastrous and injury-plagued season for the franchise. They are also being led by a manager in Terry Collins who isn’t under contract following the 2017 campaign.

There have obviously been calls in New York for the Mets to go in a completely different direction at manager. After seven seasons with the club, maybe it’s time for Collins to simply move on.

Now comes this report from Kristie Ackert of the NY Daily News indicating that those within the Mets’ brass privately believe that the 68-year-old Collins will hang it up completely after the season.

“Team sources said privately they expect the 68-year-old to retire. Collins, however, reiterated again this week, he has not decided his own future,” Ackert reported Thursday.

Surely, Collins isn’t going to tip his hand publicly. If he is looking to coach somewhere next season, New York included, public retirement talk doesn’t make much sense.

The veteran manager led New York to the World Series in 2015 and a trip to the playoffs last season. But this year has been a completely different story. New York entered Thursday’s action with a 65-87 record.

It has seen the likes of Yoenis Cespedes, Matt Harvey, Michael Conforta, Steven Matz, Noah Syndergaard, Zach Wheeler and David Wright miss substantial time this season.
