Colts’ official website offers hilarious note on Jacoby Brissett trade

Jacoby Brissett

The Indianapolis Colts acquired Jacoby Brissett, former third-string quarterback of the New England Patriots, on Saturday. They sent Phillip Dorsett to the Super Bowl champs in the exchange, a rather one-sided trade that was born out of necessity due to the team’s less-than-ideal quarterback situation.

Now, it’s worth pointing out that Brissett did okay last year when pressed into emergency duties for the Patriots. In three games, two of which he started, he completed 61.8 percent of his passes and threw for 400 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He didn’t throw games away, essentially, and earned a 1-1 record for his efforts.

But to hear the Colts tell the story, they just pulled off the steal of the century.

Here’s what the team’s official website noted about Brissett, who did have a big game in a showcase appearance during the Patriots’ final preseason game.

“The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Brissett, 24, is coming off perhaps one of the greatest preseason performances by a quarterback in NFL history on Thursday, as he completed 28-of-39 passes for 341 yards with four touchdowns and an interception — adding a rushing touchdown, as well — in the Patriots’ 40-38 loss to the New York Giants at Gillette Stadium.”

We cannot help but laugh — and laugh hard — at this very hot take: “perhaps one of the greatest preseason performances by a quarterback in NFL history…”

Sure, Brissett was hot stuff. But he was also playing against a ton of backups, and backups to backups. Many of the players Brissett made plays against won’t make an NFL roster this year.

Who knows? Maybe we’re just overly skeptical and Brissett will turn into the next Tom Brady, usurping Andrew Luck as he continues recovering from his surgery this past January. But we’re not holding our breath.

Laughing hysterically, yes. But most certainly not holding our breath.
