Under Armour CEO steps down from President Trump’s Manufacturing Council

Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank came under fire for his previous support of President Donald Trump and his policies. None other than lead pitch-man Stephen Curry called Plank himself out.

Now, after spending just over six months on Trump’s American Manufacturing Council, Plank has stepped down.

“I am appreciative of the opportunity to have served, but have decided to step down from the council,” Plank said in a statement (h/t Pro Football Talk). “I love our country and our company and will continue to focus my efforts on inspiring every person that they can do anything through the power of sport which promotes unity, diversity and inclusion.”

This move comes after the president has found himself under fire for seemingly being slow to call out those responsible for Saturday’s terrorist attack that killed one person in Virginia.

It also comes after Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier stepped down from the council, citing Trump’s remarks on the terrorist attack over the weekend.

This could very well be a case of Plank attempting to save face within a sports industry that has not exactly been friendly to President Trump’s policies since he took office back in January.

Then again, we exist in a free will state where citizens have the right to support who they see fit. Any backlash Plank and the apparel giant received due to his perceived individual support of Trump could be called a bit ridiculous.

In any event, many within the sports industry are likely happy about Plank’s decision on Monday.
