Report: Odell Beckham Jr. extension talks have yet to begin, on back burner

Odell Beckham Jr. is one of many NFL players who has a lot to prove in a contract year

The New York Giants have yet to begin negotiating an extension for star receiver Odell Beckham Jr., and one report indicates that’s not changing any time soon.

Beckham Jr. isn’t alone, however. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, “There have been no recent discussions about deals for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., guard Justin Pugh, center Weston Richburg or starting linebackers Jonathan Casillas and Devon Kennard.”

Owner John Mara recently revealed the team has yet to negotiate with Beckham Jr. in any capacity about a new deal, even while admitting the receiver deserves to get paid.

In his first three seasons, Beckham Jr. has tied his old LSU playing partner, Landry Jones, for the NFL record in receptions for one’s first three seasons. He’s hauled in 288 passes for 4,122 yards and 35 touchdowns, which are eye-popping stats by any measure.

The star receiver is playing out the fourth year of his rookie contract and is slated to be paid just over $1.8 million in base salary. Considering he’s one of the elite pass catchers in the league, that’s a paltry sum.

Though, based on his recent comments about wanting to make more than any player in the NFL, it’s easy to see why the Giants are less than thrilled at the prospect of jumping into negotiations.
