Report: Carlos Hyde ‘in good position’ as 49ers’ starting RB

The supposed competition between San Francisco 49ers running backs Joe Williams and Carlos Hyde has been rather one-sided through one week of camp.

It was reported by many that Hyde would have to fight for the starting job. Apparently the fourth-year back out of Ohio State has taken those reports to heart, because he’s had an outstanding first week of practice, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Bay Area.

Meanwhile, Williams has gotten off to a slow start, with veteran Tim Hightower being seen as the apparent No. 2 at this time.

“It was a good first week of practices for Hyde,” wrote Maiocco. “He looks – right now – to be in good position as the team’s starting running back. Veteran Tim Hightower is also looking very good. He appears to be the team’s second-best running back.”

Maiocco reports Williams has to do a better job securing the football, which indicates he’s let a few hit the turf.

This doesn’t mean the rookie out of Utah can’t still rebound to either claim the starting job or carve out a nice role in reserve. And let’s be honest, it’s hardly surprising that a rookie is struggling in the first week of camp.

However, this does indicate that all the talk that Hyde might be a surprise cut and/or trade bait were a bit out of touch with reality.
