Report: Adrian Peterson will not play in Saints preseason opener

Adrian Peterson looks to rebuild his career with the Saints.

Adrian Peterson’s debut with the New Orleans Saints will likely have to wait a week or more. According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, Peterson will not take to the field when his new team opens up its preseason slate against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday.

While Peterson did miss all but three games with a knee injury last season, this doesn’t seem to be injury related. Instead, it’s all about making sure the 32-year-old running back isn’t hurt in an otherwise meaningless preseason game. Peterson has impressed the Saints since signing on with the team during the spring. He will compete with Mark Ingram for a bulk of the touches in the Saints’ backfield this season.

The future Hall of Fame running back is two years removed from leading the NFL in rush attempts, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns with the Minnesota Vikings. Making sure he’s 100 percent and ready to go for the regular season should be the Saints’ No. 1 goal here.
