Former Houston Rockets great Hakeem Olajuwon is reportedly being pursued by groups interested in purchasing the team and has some interest in becoming a partial owner.

“Many groups now have called me and want me involved,” Olajuwon said Tuesday, per ESPN.com’s Mark Woods. “With two of the groups, I’m doing my background check to see if that is a possibility. Just an association would be great. I’m still with the organization now. I have a contract with the Rockets, not to be in an ownership position. But if the opportunity opens itself, it will be something great.”

This news came on the same day in which it was reported world famous pop star Beyonce is also interested in purchasing a minority stake. Another former Rockets big man, Dikembe Motombo, is also interested in becoming a partial owner, but Yao Ming, once rumored to have interest, is not.

It makes sense that Olajuwon is being approached by groups looking to buy the team. He’s one of the franchise’s all-time greats, owning franchise records in points (26,511), rebounds (13,382) and blocks (3,740). Olajuwon also led two championship runs for Houston, winning back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995.

The Rockets are on the market because owner Les Alexander, who purchased the team for $85 million back in 1993, shocking announced his decision to sell a couple weeks back. It’s been reported by multiple people the final sale could exceed $2 billion, especially if a bidding war occurs.
