A first-round pick of the Indianapolis Colts back in 2007, Anthony Gonzalez’ NFL career didn’t quite pan out. He recorded just 99 receptions in five seasons after seeing injuries force him from all but 11 games over the final three years of his career.
A star at Ohio State, Gonzalez is now apparently looking into the viability of running for United States Congress.
“Gonzalez, 32, is holding meetings as he eyes Ohio’s 16th Congressional District, currently represented by Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci, according to Republican sources following the race,” Cleveland.com’s Andrew J. Tobias reported on Wednesday.
Gonzalez, a Republican, will look to potentially run to replace Renacci, who is expected to run for Governor of Ohio.
Prior to his NFL career, Gonzalez starred for three seasons with the Buckeyes in Columbus. He’s a known quantity in the state, having earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2006. The receiver finished his college career having recorded 87 receptions for 1,286 yards and 13 touchdowns.
It will defintely be interesting to see what comes of this. It also must be noted that the 16th Congressional District in Ohio includes areas east of Akron as well as some suburbs of Cleveland. That’s not necessarily near where Gonzalez starred in college.
