DeAndre Levy files injury grievance against Lions

After getting cut following an injury plagued 2016, free agent linebacker DeAndre Levy has filed a grievance against his former team, the Detroit Lions.

Levy was injured in the 2016 opener against the Indianapolis Colts. While the injury never completely healed, he returned to play in Detroit’s final four regular season games, as well as its playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Per a report from ESPN’s Michael Rothstein, Levy claims that the Lions passed him in a physical that he shouldn’t have been cleared for the day before releasing him.

“I figured there was something wrong because they passed me on a physical when I couldn’t even sit down to a chair or get into a linebacker stance at the time,” Levy said, per Rothstein. “In my mind, I didn’t think about the legal contract part of it. I thought, this is f—– up, like I can’t get into position, how can I pass a physical. I didn’t know it was a physical the first time. … I went in for just a follow-up for my knee, we go through the exam or whatever and I see he puts pass on it for the physical. I’m like, ‘OK, this ain’t right.’ So I called my agent and I’m just now learning about the process of whatever.”

It’s been a challenging last two seasons for Levy. In 2013 and 2014, he was one of the best linebackers in the league, posting a combined 270 tackles with seven interceptions and 2.5 sacks, earning Second-team All-Pro honors in 2014. But he saw action in only one game in 2015 and five (plus the one postseason game) in 2016.
