Martellus Bennett throws shade at former Packers tight end

Martellus Bennett

Tight ends may not get the stats or the glory that other skill-position players do, but having a good one can be the key to success for an offense. Last season, the Green Bay Packers had a pretty decent one in Jared Cook. While Cook played well for the Packers and made some clutch plays during the 2016 season, he didn’t play well enough for Green Bay to try to retain his services for this coming year.

But Packers fans shouldn’t be too concerned about the position. Cook may have moved on to the Oakland Raiders and Derek Carr. But Green Bay signed Tom Brady’s security blanket–Martellus Bennett.

Is he an upgrade over Cook? The stats would say yes, but there is more to a tight end’s game than his stats. Cook did admit Bennett is an upgrade over him in one way during an appearance on a local Milwaukee radio program.

During an appearance on Wilde & Tausch, he admitted that the Packers are getting a better blocker in Bennet, but then said the team isn’t getting much of a pass catcher (h/t Pro Football Talk).

Bennett caught wind of the slight and threw a little shade of his own on Twitter:

Cook has no room to talk about another tight end’s receiving skills. He didn’t exactly shine last season (30 receptions for 377 yards and one touchdown). Bennett, on the other hand, had a pretty good year (55 receptions for 701 yards and seven touchdowns).

He can’t argue that Bennett had Tom Brady throwing him the ball. People will laugh even harder at him as they point out who was throwing to him.
